Daniel Goldhagen
Author and political scientist on twentieth-century mass violence, the conduct of ordinary people and how such histories are explained
About Daniel Goldhagen
My work is archival and comparative: reading the records people left about their own conduct, then testing explanations against them rather than around them. Books take years, most of it spent narrowing the question. I write for readers outside the seminar room, which means the argument has to survive being stated plainly. Recorded remarks and written exchanges suit me better than a crowded stage.
