Ellen MacArthur
Long-distance yachtswoman on solo ocean passages, weather routing and the preparation behind record attempts
About Ellen MacArthur
I sail long distances alone, which means the craft is really preparation: routing decisions made days ahead, sail changes rehearsed until they are automatic, sleep taken in twenty-minute pieces. I read weather systems for a living and learned to trust the boat before I trust the forecast. In conversation I go straight to method — how a passage is planned, where records are actually won, and what solo ocean racing asks of a person.
