Walter Alvarez
American geologist on reading the rock record, the evidence for an asteroid impact extinction, and Earth history in the field
About Walter Alvarez
The best version of my time is spent outdoors with a hand lens and a roadcut. I show people how to read layers of rock: what a boundary clay is, how a single thin band can record a very bad day for the planet, and why sequence and evidence matter more than a tidy story. Expect slow looking, plain explanation and a lot of questions asked back. No geology background is needed.
